The Poetry Project & Racial Imaginary Institute | “On Nationalism: The Fragility and the Possibility of We”

The Racial Imaginary Institute and The Poetry Project are thrilled to present a three-day symposium, “On Nationalism: The Fragility and the Possibility of We.” The program of events will take place Saturday June 11, 2022, at the Judson Memorial Church and Saturday–Sunday, June 18–19, 2022, at The Poetry Project.

Co-organized by The Racial Imaginary Institute, the CUNY Graduate Center, and The Poetry Project, “On Nationalism” convenes writers, artists, and performers to explore the affective and emotional ties of nationalism. The symposium will consist of two weekends of free and open to the public conversations and performances with LaTasha N. Nevada DiggsBhanu KapilLayli Long SoldierMaaza MengisteViet Thanh NguyenAnn Pellegrini, and many more. Please find the schedule of events below.

Through the program of events, the symposium looks to ask: How can we re-imagine nation, tribe, and community? What practices of listening, sharing, and making could be enacted across varying visions of community, decolonization and self-determination? Ticket registration for the programs, along with a full schedule, will be available on this page on May 20.

“On Nationalism” will be part of a network of exhibitions and programming at sites including David Kordansky Gallery in LA, FOAM in Amsterdam, and the CUNY James Gallery in New York.
