Festival America | Américains d’origine asiatique, le grand malentendu/ Americans of Asian Origins, the great misunderstanding

Depuis plus de cent cinquante ans, l’histoire des Américains d’origine asiatique est entachée de violence et de discriminations. Depuis l’arrivée des ouvriers chinois venus construire le chemin de fer transcontinental dans l’Ouest américain, le racisme n’a cessé de faire des ravages, des lynchages de la fin du XIXe siècle à l’internement des Américains d’origine japonaise lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Les guerres américaines en Asie du Sud-Est et l’afflux de réfugiés en provenance du Vietnam, du Cambodge et du Laos ont contribué à le nourrir, et malgré une intégration exceptionnelle, les Américains d’origine asiatique doivent toujours y faire face. Des écrivains explorent à travers leurs œuvres ce grand malentendu qui n’en finit pas.

For over one hundred and fifty years, the history of Americans of Asian origins has been
stained with violence and discriminations. Since the arrival of Chinese workers come to build
the transcontinental railroads in the American west, racism has wreaked havoc, from the
lynchings at the end of the 19th century to the internment of Americans of Japanese origins
during the second World War. The American wars in south East Asia and the influx of refugees
coming from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos have contributed in nurturing it, and in spite of an
exceptional integration, Americans of Asian origins still have to face it. Three writers explore
this great endless misunderstanding in their works.
