Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

92Y Young Leaders Series Viet Thanh Nguyen

“People who come to the U.S. as refugees know very soon that they shouldn’t call themselves refugees.”

Drawing from his own refugee and war story, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Viet Thanh Nguyen has illuminated the experiences of refugees in the United States in The Displaced, an edited collection of refugee writers; the 2017 short story collection The Refugees; and his 2018 New York Times bestselling novel The Sympathizer. In this special event for high-schoolers, students and their teachers join Nguyen for a conversation about his work on empathy, trauma, and the experiences of refugees in the U.S.

This event is produced through 92Y’s Young Leaders Series: a virtual education program that connects classrooms across the country with leading figures in the arts and humanities. The Series invites students to discover their own artistic and intellectual passions, identify resources to pursue those passions and shape the future of their world.
