Il a fait irruption sur la scène littéraire internationale en 2015 avec Le sympathisant, un premier roman post-guerre du Vietnam aussi hilarant que caustique, en un mot : radical. Un Prix Pulitzer en poche, Viet Than Nguyen, qui enseigne la littérature à l’université de Californie du Sud, publie ensuite des essais et des nouvelles sans pour autant lâcher Vo Danh, son personnage agent double, qu’il remet en selle dans Le dévoué, à Paris au début des années quatre-vingt, englué dans un trafic de cannabis. Comme dans Le sympathisant, il attaque et dénonce sans jamais renoncer à distraire. En utilisant la trame d’un roman policier qui tient à la fois de Quentin Tarantino et de Jean-Pierre Melville, il renvoie dos à dos le multiculturalisme à l’américaine et l’universalisme à la française. Toujours aussi drôle et cinglant, le style de Viet Thanh Nguyen est décidément unique !

He emerged on the international scene in 2015 with The Sympathizer, a first post Vietnam war
novel as hilarious as it was scathing, in a word: radical. One Pulitzer Prize later, Viet Thanh
Nguyen, who teaches literature at USC, has published essays and short stories without
leaving aside Vo Danh, his double agent character, whom he brings forward once again in The
Committed, in Paris at the beginning of the eighties, as he is stuck in cannabis trafficking. Just
as he did in the Sympathizer, he attacks and denounces without giving up on entertaining.
Using the structure of a crime novel which reminds us both of Quentin Tarantino and of Jean-
Pierre Melville, he confronts multiculturalism odf the American kind and universalism as claimed by the French. Viet Thanh Nguyen’s style remains both funny and devastating, in every way unique!
