Humo Book Reviews: Viet Thanh Nguyen’s “The Refugees”

The following mini book review of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Refugees was originally published by Humo.

De vluchtelingenNguyens Pulitzer Prize winnende debuut ‘De sympathisant’ deed uitkijken naar zijn tweede boek, en de verwachtingen worden méér dan ingelost met deze verhalenbundel over (u raadt het al) vluchtelingen.

Nguyens blitse Engels blijkt echter moeilijk vertaalbaar, want het Nederlands voelt soms iets te gewichtig aan voor zijn nonchalante vertelstem en kortgeschoren pareltjes van zinnen. ‘De vluchtelingen’ omlijnt de rauwe naweeën van het lijden zonder er te vaak rechtstreeks over te spreken. Verplichte kost voor fans van Mohsin Hamid.
